Sometimes it feels like we're on track. We're moving, we're grooving, we're making progress. Such is the case with my latest attempts at using vitamins, supplements and diet to further treat my children.
Since my last post Ian has come down with Strep throat (second time in two months), which is not typical of him at all. With the rounds of anti-biotics we started pro-biotics and I think this supplement has given the most benefit so far.
I went out of order - foiled my own plan, but sometimes things get in the way... like strep throat.
Long story and too many research articles short, people tend to utilize more Vitamin C when sick, as the immune system slurps this stuff up (pardon my non-technical descriptions while mom blogging). So while I planned to introduce vitamin C later I had to consider starting it immediately.
I chose another option. I started the supra vitamins instead, since these give a substantial amount of Vitamin C in addition to other nutrients. Working from 1/4 of the target dose he started taking them (Ian, 12 w/autism). I can't say if I've noticed a specific difference, but I can tell you reports from school and family members have surprised me, as they've seen changes I have not...
My oldest son, with Aspergers, also has a Vitamin D deficiency. I requested we do blood work to check his thyroid, since he is always lethargic and lacks energy. She did several tests and everything checked out except Vitamin D, so Mitchell started the supra vitamins before Ian.
Did I mention sometimes things don't go according to my perfect plan?
As for determining whether or not the vitamins are helping my oldest, I'm having a difficult time. Not surprisingly he became ill and this makes you tired... so we'll have to wait until he's back to full health and keep track of how he feels and acts.
A quick note about the probiotic: Ian no longer has a yucky film on his tongue, his feet no longer display peeling skin, nor do they have an odor requiring him to keep his shoes outside and his stool is starting to change in consistency - not to the degree we need it to, but it's better than it was.
I appreciate and enjoy all your comments and stories, so don't hesitate to chime in below.
